Several circuit techniques for approximate computing require changes on the SOC architecture level. Specifically when local voltage-scaling techniques are used, such as in Venkataramani et al. (2013) and DVAFS (Moons et al. 2017a) (Sect. 4.3), the SOC has to be organized in specific voltage domains, which can heavily influence the lay-out of the full SOC and puts extra constraints on frequency generators and voltage regulators.

In algorithmic noise tolerance (ANT) (Hegde and Shanbhag 1999, 2001) an error-free replica is put next to a main computing block as an error correcting block.
